I don't know if I have such a procedure.....

What I'm going through now is similar to what I went through during the 2012 ADM.

Basically, the feeling of distrust, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, almost tempted to quit Round 1, and then a few days later, the confidence rushes back in.

Every instrument sounds clear both on speakers and on headphones at the moment, so I'm awaiting exporting of the instrumental file before I proceed with vocals. I'm just super stoked is all......

I can get a similar feeling about a lack of motivation but it is more of a carefree attitude as a lack of confidence is not really a struggle for me. Not because I am confident in my own abilities, but rather I don’t put my identity in music and therefore if no one likes a piece, or if I wouldn’t make it to the next round, I’m okay with that. I’m learning as I go along with music, and I’m enjoying it all the same. This contest is most fun because I get to hear people giving their all on their tracks. Will be fun to just listen and see how everything plays out. I’m super stoked to hear it. No joke.

Once ChronoNomad and Guylee put their submissions up, I'll rest easy. If I'm not too tired, I'll perhaps listen to whatever's up now. Did you listen to any, and if so, what do you think of them altogether?

Well there isn’t too many submitted quite yet, but for the ones I did hear so far, I haven’t been blown away by anything yet. Mind you, what I have to say about the pieces isn’t really relevant nor is it a reflection on the quality of them. Just on a personal taste, I prefer music with a lot of depth whether it is through the music itself, or by the approach the composer took to get them written, i.e. emotion. Haven’t found too much of that yet, but I’m sure I will by the deadline.
I’ll mention three tracks that I enjoyed.

FlaggedonArrival did “We Take Over.”—the chord progression in the beginning really captured my attention and the melody he gets into is not too cliché either, but I really don’t care all too much for electronic music in general except when blended with orchestral elements or piano. So my mention and enjoyment of this piece goes to show that he has a good shot to move on. I haven’t looked who his opponents are.

DuttonsaysHi wrote a fun piece with “Tropical Dream.” It really reminded me of the Crash Bandicoot stuff back during the PS1 days. A lot of parts in this one, and I’ll be curious to see what the judges have to say about it.

Papkee with “Escape of the City” is really done well production wise and one can tell he tried swinging for the fences on this one. Doesn’t want to go down easily within the first round, and whatever the outcome is, he should be happy with it. Not making it to the next round in his case will NOT be a reflection of missing the mark.

Overall, it will be fun listening to everything that comes out of this contest.

In that case... I sincerely hope you might enjoy what I've got coming up. I'm a little nervous about the finishing touches -- but best for me not to be pretentious, and just leave it at that.

I tend to have similar listening preferences to yours, going for songs which grab me, and rating powerful songs highly.

Ah, don’t put your hopes in something so contingent such as man. Whether I enjoy it or not shouldn’t hinder your own. But I know what you mean. I’ll certainly give you a review regardless. What I find “emotional” isn’t necessarily “powerful” for another.

I really have to start doing this more. In general I've spent the last few years being very impatient with my tools and working quickly, only learning fragment by fragment - the only saving grace being that I can hear every bit how primitive it is later, and I'm starting to recognize what can be fixed. I know I can polish things up much more beautifully than I have been, make better works, but that burn out sets in fast when you're working on electronic exclusively, there's always the temptation to click 'new file' and it's so easy to give in and start fresh.

Well there's a place for that too I think. Don't want to go to the other extreme where you're never finishing the projects or spending too much time on just one. It's a tight-rope in maintaining a realistic perspective on your own works. Best to always keep moving, and I will say that there is another phenomenon that happens when creating pieces whereas the artist becomes all too familiar with the process on a particular track so as to not be able to fully enjoy the final product as a listener might.

Take David Gilmour from Pink Floyd for an example. He said something around the lines that he wished he could have experienced Dark Side of the Moon while not knowing the intricacies of it so he can understand that impression that so many listeners have had upon hearing it. It was never his favorite.

I can never fully know the impression any of my own works might have on people, good or bad. But yes, distancing yourself from your artwork after it being conceived will shed new light upon it.
